BEAUTY FROM WITHIN
What is Collagen?
* Collagen is the glue that holds the body together
* Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the body
* 75% of the dermis consists of collagen and it accounts for 90% of dermal volume
* Collagen builds scar tissue to assist in healing damaged skin
* From the age of approximately 25-35 years onwards the body loses collagen at a rate of 1.5% per year
Your Skin
Your skin is composed of 3 layers: The Epidermis, Dermis, Subcutaneous Tissue. This is the top layer - the skin you see. It consists of closely packed and overlapping cells, creating a semi waterproof barrier to bacteria entering the living cells beneath.
The Epidermis is composed of 5 cell layers
* Dead skin cells (stratum cornem; horny layer)
* Squamous Cells - 3 layers - Translucent layer (upper), Granular layer (middle) & Mucous layer (lower)
* Basal Cells
Cells called keratinocytes form the Basal Cells, just above the dermis. This is the production line of the skin, making enough cells to renew the epidermis of the entire body in approx. 3 weeks. At this deep layer the cells constantly divide - producing fresh, new cells. In the journey to the surface layer, the skin cells progressively become squarer and flatter, until they are absolutely flat. They also become joined by a fatty, cement-like substance, which helps form a tough layer. By the time these cells have reached their destination, they are flat and hard and have lost a great deal of moisture. The Dermis: The Subcutaneous Tissue. This layer provides cushion and structure, making up 90% of the bulk of the skin. It consists of a dense bed of strong white collagen fibers and yellow elastic fibers through which blood vessels, muscle cells, nerve fibers, lymph channels, hair follicles and nerve glands are interspersed. The dermis gives strength and elasticity to your skin. As you age, the dermis becomes thinner and the skin becomes more transparent. This layer lies beneath the dermis and is composed largely of fat, through which blood vessels and nerves run. This later, which specializes in manufacturing fat, is unevenly distributed over your body. The roots of the oil and sweat glands are located here. Subcutaneous tissue thins and disappears with aging.
